May 9th - Shelter

May 17th (Saturday) - The Birthday

May 23rd - Itty Bitty Titty Committee

May 30th - Nina’s Heavenly Delights, Co-Sponsored by the LGBTQA!

Here are some short synopses of each one to keep you tied over until they show.

The Bubble: Three young Israelis, two guys and a girl, share an apartment in Tel Aviv’s hippest neighborhood. Trying to put aside political conflicts and focusing on their lives and loves, these progressive 20-somethings are often accused of living in an escapist “bubble”. Among them are three young Israeli flatmates: headstrong Lulu, who works in a bath products boutique, flamboyant Yali, who manages a trendy café, and brooding music store clerk Noam, who spends his weekends serving at checkpoints in the National Guard. When Noam meets and falls in love with a young Palestinian man named Ashraf, the young Israelis decide to help Ashraf stay on in Tel Aviv illegally. They dress him in modern Isralei garb, give him a Hebrew name and put him to work in Yali's café. They all decide to celebrate their peaceful coexistence at a beach party calling for an end to the occupation of Palestinian territories. But in the end, the young people's utopia is shattered by the political and social realities of the Middle East and the constant outbursts of violence.

Straight Hike for the Butch Dyke: Can a team of hand-bag swinging straight gals help Libby stop washing her brushcut with hand soap, and move away from rainbow-influenced décor? As the “Femme 4” try to add a little sugar to a tomboy butch, it looks like maybe the makeover’s happening in reverse! This take off of TV’s Queer Eye phenomenon is a comic treat from Down Under.

Shelter : "Shelter" centers on a young man, Zach, in San Pedro, Calif., who gives up on his dream of art school in order to provide for his family, consisting of his aging father and his young nephew Cody, whose mother Jeanne has decided her priorities lie elsewhere. When his best friend’s brother Shaun returns to town, Zach finds in him a friend and confidante. As Zach becomes increasingly attracted to Shaun, their casual surfing relationship turns into much more, setting off a chain of events forcing Zach to choose between continuing to put others first or fighting for what he wants for himself.

The Birthday: Iran’s surprisingly liberal policies regarding transsexuality are explored in this illuminating documentary profiling MTFs and one FTM in the Islamic society. Because the Koran doesn’t say anything about transsexuality, unlike homosexuality, it is not forbidden – Ayatollah Khomeini himself granted religious permission for surgeries. The Birthday focuses on one MTF’s transition and her relationships with family members who question why a man would willingly take on a female’s subservient position in Iranian society.

Itty Bitty Titty Committee: Dumped by her girlfriend, rejected from the only college to which she applied and wearing an A cup in a C cup world Anna laments her life. Leaving work, she meets Sadie, the sexy leader of a radical punk-feminist group called the CIA (Clits in Action). Anna enters into this secretive world of eradicating phallo-centric & misogynic imagery, embarking on her first radical mission, feeling alive for the first time being the target of Sadie’s flirtatious actions. Things start to go sour when the CIA discovers that all of their acts have been co-opted or quickly undone and they only people who know about their group are its members. Once the CIA becomes disenchanted they dismantle. Can Anna regain her friendships and resurrect the CIA with her brilliant idea?

Nina’s Heavenly Delights: In this spicy romantic comedy, Nina is a closeted Indo-Scottish woman who learned how to cook from her father. He taught her that if she listened to her heart, she would always make the best dish. When she returns home for his funeral, she finds that the family restaurant is in trouble. She convinces her old schoolmate Lisa to help save the restaurant by winning the “Best of the West” curry competition. But while grinding the spices and chopping chilies, things heat up between them. To win, Nina must remember not only how to prepare the dishes from her childhood, but also how to listen to her heart, discovering that love is the most important ingredient, both in cooking and in life.
